I might be interested in joining but I'm not sure if its for me? Give it a try! We offer free trial sessions at the beginning of the year, so come and see if you like it! There is no obligation and you will be amongst a huge group of people in exactly the same situation as yourself. You really have nothing to lose in simply giving it a go and only the possibility of everything to gain! There is also an absolute beginners class that starts at the beginning of semester 2 if you missed us the first time around! If it is half way through a semester and you are interested in coming along to see what we do, just contact us to see what we can offer you - you will probably be able to join in a lesson for free to see what its like!
What happens at a taster session? At these sessions we give you an idea of what you should expect to get out of the club if you decide to join, we have a bit of a laugh, and go up to the bar afterwards! This is a great time to actually see what we do rather than making assumptions without committing yourself to anything.
What are the lessons like? The guys and girls are taught a couple of steps seperately, building up a couple of steps at a time into a short movement. There are always several demonstration couples in the middle showing you exactly how it should be done and once you have the hang of it you pair up and try it out yourselves! You will change partner quite a few times so you get to talk to other people (once you can cope with concentrating on your feet and mouths at the same time...)
Do I need a dance partner to come to lessons? No, not at all! You definitely do not need a dance partner nor even anyone to come along with you. One of the main benefits of dancing is that you get to meet lots of new people. You can come on your own, or with a group of friends and you will get to dance with lots of people in the lessons. If you fancy pushing it a bit further and decide to compete, you can form dance partnerships later, and even then you dont have to stick with the same partner!
What are the benefits of learning to dance? Our club is one of the most socially active clubs at Bath, you'll get to meet lots of new friendly people in a great atmosphere, whether in the lessons, at competitions or at socials. Dancing is also great for improving fitness, flexibility, balance and coordination and may be very helpful for other sports as many of our members have found. All parts of the body are used in dancing. The sport is particularly good for strengthening the back and stomach muscles. It also helps people develop excellent posture and tones up the legs. For an average weight person, doing the slowest of the ballroom dances - the waltz and the foxtrot can burn 300 calories per hour. Doing the fastest of the latin dances - the jive can easily burn 1500 calories per hour, with plenty of breaks in between included. On top of all that, just think, you'll know what to do next time you go on a dance floor!
Isn't dancing for women? We suggest you ask the male rugby players and similar members that question... we think you'll find the answer short and concise - NO! Ballroom dancing has the image of the men being true gentlemen and latin dancing has the image of the men being fit, cool and sexy... Guys - What more could you want than meeting and dancing with lots of enthusiastic girls?! You know how the old saying goes: "Men who are good on the dance floor ..... "
What kind of shoes and clothes should I wear? For lessons, any comfortable clothes will do, tight skirts are best avoided for the girls as it will make it a bit more difficult to move. Any shoes will do to start with that have a closed back (ie no flip flops... or you'll find yourself tripping over!). If you decide to compete, all the information you will require including what clothes and shoes to wear will be given to you seperately or take a look at the Dancesport section of the site. |
