Our lessons are enjoyable and relaxed occasions (it is a dancing lesson after all!) and take place on Tuesdays or Sundays, depending on your level. They are group lessons and our teacher, Paula Goodyear, has been teaching Latin and Ballroom at Bath for nearly 20 years!
Tuesday’s lessons are in Mech Eng (4E3.40) and Sunday’s lessons are in Clavteron Rooms, unless otherwise noted!
We are also now running a Supervised Practice on Fridays in Mech Eng (4E3.40) which runs from 7 until 9. After lessons on Sundays and Tuesdays, you are more than welcome to stay and practise until 23.30. Many of the seniors stay right until the end and this provides a fantastic opportunity for everyone to learn even more from them!
Absolute Beginners: These sessions are special as they only start in Semester 2. They are for those who have no previous Latin & Ballroom experience and didn’t join at the start of the year, or only managed to come to a few sessions and want to start up again. NB: Absolute Beginners lessons start on Tuesday 9th February.
Beginners: These lessons are for people who have never done any Latin & Ballroom dancing before (or very little). We encourage everyone to give it a try and so your first lesson, if you haven't attended a taster session, will be free!
Accelerated Beginners: These lessons start about 4 weeks into Semester 1 and are designed for people who are very enthusiastic. Beware, though, that different steps and different dances are taught in the Beginners and Accelerated Beginners lessons so you must keep going to the Beginners lessons too!
Beginners Technique: Starting about 4 weeks into Semester 1, these sessions are designed purely for technique development. These outline the steps you’ve learnt in the other lessons in lots of detail and are great for preparing you for medal tests at the end of the year and especially for competitions. We strongly suggest that if you attend Accelerated Beginners that you come to these too.
Novice: Novice is for people who have generally been dancing Latin & Ballroom for about a year. The majority of the classes are made up of the previous year’s beginners!
Intermediate: On the whole, people who attend the Intermediate classes have been dancing for at least a year or two and often about half the people that attend Novice are good enough to also attend Intermediate if they wish to! Again, different things are taught at the Novice and Intermediate lessons so if you are in the Novice lesson and would also like to attend the Intermediate lesson, you should do both!
Advanced: These lessons are for those with at least two years Latin & Ballroom experience and have done everything that the Intermediate course covers. Each year the top percentage of dancers is assessed and this course is designed around their standard. Ask Paula (our teacher) or the committee if you are not sure whether you should attend these lessons or not.
Practice: This session is an open session for everyone to come along to practise their steps and routines. There are no teachers and there is no fee! There are always plenty of people to help you out and it‘s lots of fun!
Prices: Although we would love to have free lessons, this just isn't possible! Lessons are £2.50, but if you want to stay for following technique lessons you can do so for £1 extra. Supervised practice costs £2 per couple (or £1 each). We do have a "ten lessons" card available for £20, making each lesson only £2! Fees for the lessons cover room hire fees and teacher’s fees, but we keep them as low as possible - to have the same quality of teaching elsewhere would cost a lot more!
